TITICACA NATURE
Trek and sailing in a unique setting

Discovery 4 days from March to November Private Spanish or English speaking

Along the way…

Titicaca is certainly the most sacred lake in the Andean culture: according to the legend Tunupa, the God who created the Aymaras, was born from this inland sea. This ancient culture, which thrived for thousands of years, established its “capital” at Tiwanaku. Following this belief, the Incas who conquered this area instigated a legend according to which the God Sun Viracocha created his son Manco Cápac, the first Inca, and his spouse Mama Ocllo on the Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun)

Lake Titicaca is also a magnificent natural setting. Under the stares of the highest summits of the Cordillera Real, the islands are reflected in its limpid waters reaching to the horizon. Breath deep, we are on our way to a unique outdoor expedition!

PROGRAM

Day 1 : LA PAZ – HUATAJATA - SURIKI

Departure from the hotel at 9 a.m. in a private vehicle. We follow the Cordillera Real until we reach the village of Huatajata (1h), where we can try one of their delicious trout, gastronomic specialty of the lake.

We embark in one of their authentic and colorful fishing boats and navigate the lake at the whim of the winds until we reach one of the small nearby islands: Suriki or Kalahuta known for their handicraft make out of reeds (between 2 and 4 hours depending on the wind’s mood...).
All included. Bivouac

Day 2 : SURIKI – TIQUINA - COPACABANA
We cross towards the Tiquina Straits, separating the larger from the smaller part of the Lake. After a 3 to 5-hour crossing (depending on the weather conditions), we land on the South shore, not too far from the village of Tiquina, where our private vehicle awaits us to take us to Copacabana (45 min).
In the afternoon we visit the most interesting sites in town: Horca del Inca, cathedral… We climb the Way of the Cross to view the sunset (remember to bring a headlamp for the descent).
Cold lunch. Dinner open. Hotel ** / lake view.

Day 3 : COPACABANA - TREK ISLA DEL SOL- YUMANI

The trek follows along the crest of the Yampupata Peninsula. We cross the village of Zampaya that time seems to have forgotten...
Arrival in Yampupata after a 4/5-hour walk. A boat takes us to the Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun), where we disembark at the old Inca Palace of Pilkokaina.
A 30/40 minute-walk brings us to the village of Yumani, from where there is a magnificent view of the lake.

Cold lunch. All included. Lodging at María and Ismael’s house (basic comfort).
Note: During the following 2 days a boat will be at our disposal to transport the group as well as the backpacks during the walks.

Day 4 : YUMANI – YAMPUPATA – TREK – COPACABANA – LA PAZ

From Yumani, we start the trek by following the crest of the Island to the North where we find the vestiges of the Inca ruins of Chincana, the labyrinth in Aymara (3 to 4-hour walk).
Our boat takes us back to Copacabana after lunch. Return to La Paz in private transport (3/4h).
