TUPIZA, INTRODUCTION

Tupiza. Located South of Potosí and accessible by train, this cute little village with its Spanish character attracts more and more travelers every year because of its colorful scenery and the numerous strange geological formations that can be found in the area. If you travel during the summer and have enough time, you can spend there a few delicious days bathing in the river and strolling between the geological formations.

HISTOIRE
The troops of the Inca Tupac Yupanqui occupied the area until the arrival of Diego Almagro and his army. Then the village, built in 1574, took part in the making of the Bolivian history and in particular with the essential part it took in the victory over the Spanish during the battle of Suipacha.
During the Peruvian invasion of 1840, the president at the time, Ballivian, took refuge in Tupiza and organized his army from there before pushing back the Peruvians (Ingavi battle, 1841).
The first Bolivian socialist political party was founded in Tupiza in 1905. Rapidly, the wealthy Aramayo family of silver mining fame crushed its development.
But what made Tupiza famous is peculiar. In 1907, the caravan that was transporting the salaries of the workers of Aramayo was attacked at the level of Huaca Huañusca, near Tupiza. The authors were named Robert Leroy Parker known as “Butch Cassidy” and Harry AlfonsoLongabaugh known as “Sundance Kid”. They were captured and killed shortly after.
