PARAPENTING BOLIVIA
Flight over the Cordilleras of the Andes

Parapente 15 days From April to October Private Spanish or English speaking guide

Along the way…

Which passionate parapentist has not dreamed of flying over the Cordillera of the Andes?
As a backdrop, the great volcanoes of the Western Cordillera and the most remote areas of the Altiplano: colorful lagunas inhabited by flamingoes, high-altitude deserts… These wide-open spaces offer themselves to us in the most magnificent way possible: viewed from the sky!
Six unforgettable flights, from mythical Lake Titicaca to volcanoes Tunupa, Ollagüe, Licancabur and Uturuncu. A real must!

Warning: these flights are not catered for beginners because of a complex aerodynamics (altitude and weak air support / relief / intensity of sun radiations). The parapentist must be autonomous. Our agency is responsible for organization, logistics but will not in any way take on the role of parapenting instructor.

This tour, particularly designed for photo lovers, first takes us to the Jach´a Apacheta Mirador, on the edge of the precipice of the city of El Alto. Then we go to the K´Illi K´Illi Mirador and to the Laykakota Park, on the Northwestern side of the city. Afterwards, we cross the Americas Bridge to go to the “Plaza de España” Mirador, in the colonial neighborhood of Sopocachi. From there, an abrupt descent leads us to the “South Zone”, passing through Llojeta and the “Garden Cemetery”, and finally to the Valley of the Moon, a place where we will be able to walk between psychedelic looking limestone formations.
In the afternoon our vehicle brings us back to the City Center and drops us off in the heart of the colorful and animated Andean market of La Paz. Return to the hotel on foot, accompanied by our guide.

In about 4 hours, we reach the viewpoint (el. 4700 m.a.s.l.) offering an exceptional panorama. We stop in the heart of the Salar on Incahuasi Island and on Isla del Pescado (Fish Island). Theses islands, both of volcanic origin, are covered with stromatolites (fossilized bacteria representing the first traces of life on earth) and giant cacti. The Isla del Pescado offers a great take off point, the flight is short, 150 meters of elevation, landing on the Salar. In the afternoon, we head south towards the village of San Juan (3/4h), were are located the famous mummies of the “Lipez Lords” (1200 DC) as well as a small museum.
Cold lunch. All included. Lodging with local host (basic comfort).

Early departure towards the volcano Ollague (active). We cross the  Salar de Chiguana and then take a track that leads us to an ancient sulfur mine located at an altitude of 5500 meters. We leave our vehicle as high as we can (until the dirt road is not manageable anymore) to finish the ascent on foot (3 to 6-hour walk). Descent with a parapent. We head south, along the Chilean border. We drive along the “Route of the Jewels”: lagunas Ch’arkota, Honda, Ramaditas, sanctuary to 3 varieties of pink flamingoes. The track traverses the magnificent landscapes of the Siloli desert and its famous “Arbol de Piedra” (Stone Tree) where we may be able to spot some viscachas before arriving at the laguna Colorada. This laguna owes its intense red-brick color to the presence in its water of millions of shellfish Artemia, well-studied by scientists for their incredible adaptability in saline areas. We keep heading south for an excursion to the Sol de Mañana Geysers (el. 4850 m.a.s.l.) a volcanic crater from which escapes sulfuric fumes and heavy water. We then stop for breakfast in Polques before skirting Laguna Salada and crossing the Dali Desert (named after the scenery reminiscent of one of his paintings). We reach the lagunas Blanca and Verde, at the foot of volcanoes Juriques and Licancabur (el. 5960 m.a.s.l.) at the end of the afternoon. Curious phenomenon: when the wind picks up, the waters of Laguna Verde change to a spectacular emerald color.
Cold lunch. All included. Lodging with local host (Basic comfort).

Ascent with guide – no technical difficulty – good physical condition required
Departure in the morning from the village of Quetena towards the hillsides of the active volcano Uturuncu (“jaguar” in Quechua). We follow one of the highest drivable tracks in the world, an old mining road, culminating at 5700 meters above sea level. Depending on the snow level, the vehicle can drop us off at about 5000 m.a.s.l. From there, we start our ascent by following the dirt track to its end. A last effort will take us to the summit.

8 a.m. departure from the hotel for a long drive. We need to cross the Altiplano. This is an experience in itself as we watch unroll some of the most remote parts of Bolivia through our windows. After 4 to 5 hours of swampy dirt road, we encounter pavement in the village of Challapata. An hour and a half more and we are in Oruro, town famous for its local carnival, the biggest in South America after the one in Rio de Janeiro. Arrival in La Paz in the afternoon (3 hours of paved road from Oruro).
Lunch on the way (included). Dinner open. Hotel  ***.

Day 14: LA PAZ – CHACALTAYA - LA PAZ / PARAPENTE

Departure from the hotel at 8 a.m., in a private vehicle, for Chacaltaya, which used to be the highest ski resort in the world (el. 5300 m.a.s.l.). In fact, it is more a curiosity than a ski resort, the way we understand it in our countries. One and only slope and a ski lift dating from the turn of the 20th century, this is what you will find
From this altitude, the view over La Paz and the Altiplano with majestic Huyana Potosi as a backdrop reaching more than 6000 meters in height is mesmerizing. Take off from above the refuge refuge. Various landing possibilities. Return to La Paz early afternoon. End of day open.
