The sacred lake of the Incas…
Historical sanctuary, but also a magnificent natural sight, we visit Lake Titicaca in an original way: by mountain bike! Three days to discover this region of the Altiplano, where the horizon meets what seems to be a sea, in the cool breeze coming from the summit of the Cordillera Real. Let yourself be seduced!
Note: Security assured by a support 4WD (except on the Isla del Sol). Easy. .

Lake Titicaca by mountain bike

PROGRAM

Day 1 : LA PAZ – ACHACACHI – TIQUINA – COPACABANA / 50 km mountain bike ride

We depart from the hotel at 9 a.m. with our private 4WD for the village of Achacachi, located 80km from La Paz (2- hour), near Lake Titicaca. As we exit the village, we mount our bikes and head in the direction of the Huata peninsula. After a succession of uphill and downhill and the crossing of the villages of Santiago de Huata and Vichi, we climb to Estancia Jankho Amaya (last uphill-about 400 meters of elevation gain). We then descend towards the Tiquina Straights, separating the larger part of Lake Titicaca from its smaller counterpart. We cross the Straights on a barge, then head for Copacabana by car (the most courageous can continue on their bikes). We climb the hill of the Way of the Cross to watch the sunset (don’t forget your headlamp for the descent).
Cold lunch. Dinner open. Hotel ** / lake view.

Day 2 : COPACABANA – YAMPUPATA – ILE DU SOLEIL – YUMANI / 25 km VTT De Copacabana, COPACABANA – YAMPUPATA – ISLA DEL SOL – CHINKANA – YUMANI / 25 km mountain bike ride

From Copacabana, we head on our bikes towards the extremity of the peninsula and the village of Yampupata (accumulated elevation gain of 800 to 900 meters / 15 km). From Yampupata, our private motorboat takes us to the North of the Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun) and the vestiges of Chinkana, in Aymara “the labyrinth” (2 h 1/2). We discover the Sacred Rock of the Incas, from where God Viracocha gave birth to his son Manco Capac, the first Inca, before following, on our bikes, the trail of the crests, heading north / south for about 2 hours (short up hills and down hills / altitude between 3900 and 4000 m. / 10 km).
Cold lunch. All included. Lodging at María and Ismael’s house (basic comfort).
Note: from the pier all the way to the Chinkana site, steep uphill of a few hundred meters where we will need to carry our bikes on our backs.

Day 3 : YUMANI – COPACABANA – TIQUINA – LA PAZ / 40 km mountain bike ride

In the morning we descend the 500 steps to the pier of the Fuente of the Inca where our boat awaits us to take us back to Copacabana (1 ½ hour). From there, we start directly on our mountain bikes. After clearing the Pass overlooking Copacabana, we descend to the Lake shores. We advance through “pajonal” until we reach the village of Parkipujllo. This remote village has the particularity of being cut in half by the border Peru-Bolivia. We then ascend to the crest where we get back on the paved road. The descent towards the Tiquina Straits is a real treat.
Traverse of the Straits by raft, the return to La Paz in private vehicle (3h).
Cold lunch (included). Dinner open. Hotel ***.
