TRANS-YUNGAS by MOUNTAIN BIKE
Coroico – Puente Villa - Chulumani - Irupana

Mountain biking 3 /5 day from March to November Private Spanish or English speaking

Along the way…

Born from the highest summits of the Cordillera Real, the valleys of the Yungas abruptly plunge in to the Amazon Basin. This is without a doubt one of the most impressive natural phenomenon in Bolivia.
As we descend from the nearby Altiplano, the mineral landscape is replaced by a colorful flora, new fragrances and waterfalls, which seem to fall from the sky… Further down, the vegetation becomes yet thicker and eventually we enter the Jungle. On these vertiginous slopes are cultivated the fruits and vegetables that later on will be sold on the markets of the Altiplano: mangoes, papayas, bananas and coffee grow amongst the parrots and monkeys. And let’s not forget coca, also, here a traditional cultivation. A spectacular show, for cyclist in good physical condition.
Note:Security assured by a 4WD support vehicle.

PROGRAM

Day 1 : LA PAZ – COROICO / MAD MOUNTAIN BIKE DESCENT

Departure at 8 a.m. from our hotel in a private 4WD, in direction to the Cordillera Real. After passing La Cumbre, a pass at 4750 m of altitude, the Andes abruptly drop below our feet. A few hundred kilometers lower as the crow flies, is the Amazon Basin! Welcome to this incredible intermediate region called the Yungas, named after an ancient pre-Incan tribe that used to live on its steep slopes.
Our exciting mountain bike descends starts at the Cumbre. As we drive down the winding road, the scenery becomes more lush, the air more humid, the wind yet warmer... more than 3500 meters of elevation loss to reach Yolosa (el. 1100 m.a.s.l.) in just a few hours!
To end the day, a steep 7-kilometer uphill (650 m of elevation gain) takes us to the village of Coroico, the “pearl of the Yungas” (possibility of ending in the assistance 4WD).
Cold lunch (included). Dinner open (restaurant El Cafetal recommended). Hotel ** / swimming pool

Day 2 : COROICO – PUENTE VILLA / 60 km mountain bike ride

We cross the Yungas from north to south on very steep mountain slopes. We drive along a succession of ascents and descents via a seldom-traveled route. Coca terraces, coffee plantations and orchards line our journey to the village of Puente Villa. Our hotel is located a little ways from the village, in a tropical garden in the middle of the forest.
Afternoon open, Options to swim in the river or in the swimming pool or to take a walk by the river.
Cold lunch. All included. *** / Swimming pool.

Day 3 : PUENTE VILLA – LA PAZ / 75 km mountain bike ride

After breakfast and a last glass of lemon or papaya juice, we get back in the 4WD and follow the Unduavi River located in the most beautiful valley of the region. Suddenly, on a promontory dominating the river and hidden behind ferns, we glimpse the silhouette of a Medieval castle. Probably the strangest building in Bolivia, it was erected by Paraguayan prisoners during the Chaco conflict (1932), in order to satisfy the whim of the Bolivian president. After leaving behind the waterfall of «Bridal Veil», named because of the mist its water generates, the valley becomes narrower and we begin our long ascent towards the Cordillera. (Option to finish the day in the assistance vehicle).
Lunch on the road (included). Dinner open. Hotel ***.

OR :
Day 3 : PUENTE VILLA – CHULUMANI – ECOLOGICAL RESERVE - APA APA / 35 km mountain bike ride

We continue our trip to Chulumani the capital of the province of the South Yungas, a charming village surrounded by coca plantations. We pass the village and head to the Apa Apa Eco Lodge, where fresh fruit juices and homemade tropical ice cream await us.
After lunch, a local guide will take us for a short walk to discover the marvels of the old growth rain forest, one of the treasures of the area.
All included. Night at the Eco Lodge Apa Apa.

Day 4 : APA-APA ECOLOGICAL RESERVE – IRUPANA / 30 km mountain bike

We are in a practically unknown part of the Yungas in a region of rolling hills. Coca fields, coffee plantations and orchards alternate along our way to Irupana.
We take possession of our cabañas, located in the middle of a sweet lemon and tangerine plantation.
After lunch, rest at the pool, or walk to discover the secrets of the surrounding nature (with local guide).
Lunch included. Dinner open. Hotel *** / spectacular views / swimming pool.

Day 5 : IRUPANA - PUENTE VILLA – LA PAZ / 75 km mountain bike ride

Departure from Irupana in 4WD to Puente Villa (2h30). We then take our bikes to ride up the Unduavi River through the most beautiful valley of the region. Suddenly, on a promontory dominating the river and hidden between the ferns, we glimpse the silhouette of a Medieval castle. Probably the strangest building in Bolivia, it was erected by Paraguayan prisoners during the Chaco conflict (1932), in order to satisfy the whim of the Bolivian president. 35 km to reach the waterfall of «Bridal Veil», named because of the mist cloud its water produces. The valley narrows and we begin our long ascent towards the Cordillera. (Option to finish the day in the assistance vehicle).
Lunch on the road (included). Dinner open. Hotel ***.
